Entoptic phenomenon refers to visual experiences that occur within the eye itself rather than in the external world. Some synonyms for entoptic phenomenon include visual noise, phosphenes, and eye floaters--all of which describe intricate patterns, colors and shapes that emerge from within the eye. Additionally, entoptic phenomenon can also be referred to as the sparkling, or flashing of lights, or afterimages that remain after a bright light is viewed for a few seconds. Whatever name it goes by, scientists have yet to definitively explain why entoptic phenomenon occurs. Thanks to it, however, we are able to gain a deeper understanding of the intricacies and mysteries of human vision.
